THIS WEEK IN DRESDEN

This week is the 74th Anniversary of the bombing of Dresden and this year is the 60th Anniversary of the twinning of Coventry with Dresden. Two of our Artist friends, John Yeadon and Lisa Gunn will be opening their exhibition in Dresden on 12 February. Details below:

2019 marks the 60th anniversary of the twinning of Dresden and Coventry. On this occasion, we cordially invite you to join us for these two events in February:

Monday, 11 February, 17 hrs, Kreuzkirche: Reading by Rev. Andy March, Coventry, from his book “Dreams of Dresden”

Subtitled “A story of loss, love, and reconciliation in times of war”, the book tells the story of Andy’s grandfather who in 1936/37 taught English at Dresden’s Kreuzschule. Excerpts will show how he empathized with young people growing up in Nazi Germany, was friendly with a Dresden family and took up their friendship again after the ravages of war.
Please find more about Andy’s book here – we are looking forward to his reading, which will be presented as the Kreuzkirche “Prayer for Peace”.

Tuesday, 12 February, 18 hrs, Kreuzkirche: Opening of “Condition humaine”, an exhibition by the Coventry/Dresden Arts Exchange
“Condition humaine” presents works by artists from Coventry and Dresden, themed on human vulnerability, struggle and resilience - qualities Coventry and Dresden share. The Lord Mayors of both cities will be present and give addresses.
We are proud to have been supporting the Coventry/Dresden Arts Exchange since its beginnings – please find more about this venture here .

A unique Coventry Friendship Association invites you to our A.G.M. on May 21st at 6.30pm in the Council Offices . This friendship group has existed for 55 years to promote personal understanding and friendship with members of Coventry twin cities . C.A.I.F. seeks to update and increase membership to add to the recent group of Polish and Serbian members. We are a multicultural group without political or religious affiliation. Our Lord Mayor is the President and, whenever called upon, the Association assists the council in offering hospitality to foreign visitors. A regular Peace Concert is given in November and its two choirs, The Nightingales and the Polish group, Senza Nome, along with International musicians take part. This October, we will host 20 members from the German town of Meschede. Have you ever noticed Meschede Way in Coventry? There is a Coventry Bridge in their town, which is not very far from the place where the Bouncing Bomb flooded the farmland. Should anyone feel they could host a German couple we would be glad to hear from you. We have hosted people from many countries including USA, Russia, France, Germany and Austria and have visited them in return. Recently we visited Warsaw and are arranging a visit to Bologna in Spring 2016. New members will be most welcome to join us. Past destruction and enmity of all our countries in war are not a barrier to eventual friendship. This group of people have been enabled to learn at first hand the very real friendship and understanding of countries once at war with each other. You may find contact detail on our website www.caif.co.uk We look forward to hearing from you. Pat Trickett ( Secretary of C.A.I.F.)
